Pryor Mountain Road Directions:

Take Rt. 212 south from Laurel. At Fort Rockvale turn south on Rt. 310 towards Bridger.

  1. 2.5 miles south of Bridger (0.6 miles after you cross the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River) turn left on Pryor Mountain Road, which soon becomes gravel; note a worn sign stating "National Forest Access."  Follow the most traveled road and signs for "Pryor Mountain Road," "Big Ice Cave" and "Sage Creek."

  2. Turn left at the "T" junction about 11 miles from Rt. 310. Much of this section of the road is through the Crow Reservation. Avoid trespassing off the road.

  3. About 15 miles from Rt. 310 the Pryor Mountain Road crosses a north-south road on the old raised railroad bed. Don't turn. Continue straight across.

  4. 21 miles from Rt. 310 there is a fork in the road; take the right fork.  At 21.5 miles you will enter Custer National Forest.

  5. Less than a mile later a road branches left to Sage Creek Campground. Continue straight ahead.

  6. At 29.6 miles from Rt. 310, Pryor Mountain Road passes Crooked Creek Road on the right. Continue straight, following the sign toward Big Ice Cave.

  7. At a junction 33.6 miles from Rt. 310 continue straight 200 yards to arrive at Big Ice Cave. The left turn goes to Dry Head Vista about 38 miles from Rt. 310.

Higher-clearance vehicles are better for Pryor Mountain Road, but, with care, most vehicles can drive this road when it is dry and after the snow melts. If there have been recent rains, even 4WDs can have trouble. There can be bad mud a few miles before the National Forest boundary, where the road improves. The road gets rougher after passing Crooked Creek Road.
